August 25: Entrepreneurs to Discuss How They Financed the Growth of Their Business

Chiquitta and Lorne Harris will discuss how they set-up their accounting system and obtained financing from PeopleFund to fund the growth of their business, Majestic Design Group, on the first segment of the August 25 edition of Economic Perspectives. The Harris’ firm, originally named LDH Technology, was started in 2002 to provide graphic and web design services. Their customers include B&D Protective Services, Houston Black Expo, and Wiley College.

On the second segment of Economic Perspectives, Capital City African American Chamber of Commerce President Chiquita Eugene will provide information on the 1st Annual Black Expo & Membership Drive coming up on September 20.

August 23: Small Business Loan Seminar

Representatives from BiGAustin, PeopleFund, and Wachovia Bank will discuss “Preparing Small Businesses to Access Capital,” on Saturday, August 23, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., at SummerFest 2008 at the Monarch Event Center, 6406 I-H 35. The seminar is sponsored by the National Association of Black Accountants Austin Cen-Texas Chapter as part of its Power Lunch Series and it qualifies for CPE credit for accountants.

Moderated by Hopeton Hay, host of Economic Perspectives, the panelists will discuss the small business loan application process with a special emphasis on the financial and tax documents typically required to apply for a loan. The speakers are

  • Jamie Noyola, Director of lending, PeopleFund,
  • Shirley Sheffield, Portfolio Manager, BigAustin

August 18: Preparing Small Businesses to Access Capital

Wachovia Bank financial specialist Arlen Munoz will be the featured guest on the August 18 edition of Economic Perspectives. Munoz will discuss the small business loan application process with a special emphasis on the financial and tax documents typically required to apply for a loan. Some of the areas that will be covered in the interview include:

  • What documents are required to apply for a loan
  • How your accountant can improve your chances of getting approved for a loan
  • How banks evaluate small business loan applications
  • Most common reasons for loan applications being denied
  • What it takes to get approved for a loan for a start-up

Keith Wyche, author of Good Is Not Enough: And Other Unwritten Rules For Minority Professionals, will be interviewed on Economic Perspectives on August 11, 5:30 p.m. – 6 p.m.  Wyche, who is President of U.S. Operations for Pitney Bowes, provides guidance in his book for minority professionals on how to move from middle management to senior management in Corporate America.

Wyche joined Pitney Bowes in 2003 as Area Vice President-Western Operations where he focused on driving customer acquisition and retention strategies to achieve accelerated growth.  Prior to joining Pitney Bowes, Wyche was Group Vice President for Wireless Sales at Convergys Corporation.  His previous experiences include a variety of senior level positions with major corporations including Ameritech, AT&T, and IBM.

In a new feature of Economic Perspectives, there will be special guest co-hosts to assist in interviewing authors of books that match their expertise and/or interests.  Belinda Matingou, President of the Austin chapter of the National Black MBAs Association, will be serving as a guest co-host for the interview of Wyche.

Next Guest on Economic Perspectives August 4 Discusses Decison Making

Ori Brafman, co-author of the New York Times bestseller SWAY: The Irrestible Pull of Irrational Behavior will be a guest on Economic Perspectives on Monday, August 4, 5:30 p.m. – 6 p.m. on KAZI 88.7 FM in Austin, Texas. Ori Brafman, who has an MBA from Stanford University co-wrote Sway with his brother Rom Brafman, who has a doctorate in psycholgy.

Drawing on cutting-edge research from the fields of social psychology, behavioral economics and organizational behavior, Brafman’s book provides insight for entrepreneurs and managers on how logical decisions can be undermined by irrational psychological forces.
